Cyclone Sagar, which had developed over the Gulf of Aden off Yemen in the last few days, has moved further towards the southwest in the past 24 hours, and is likely to weaken gradually over the next 12 hours, the India Meteorological Department said in a statement. The cyclone is not likely to affect coastal Gujarat, reported NDTV. On Thursday, ports in the state were put on alert in connection with the anticipated storm.

Jayanta Sarkar, the director of the Met Centre in Ahmedabad, told NDTV that the storm was moving towards the Gulf of Oman. “The possibility of Cyclone Sagar making any significant impact along the Gujarat coast is very less,” she said. “There is no need to worry.

Additional Chief Secretary of Revenue Department Pankaj Kumar said the storm would not affect Gujarat. “It is going further away from us.”

Fisherpeople, however, have been advised not to venture into the Gulf of Aden in the next 48 hours.

The Met department has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied with squalls in isolated places in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal on Saturday and Sunday. Thunderstorms are forecast in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep. Dust storms have been forecast in West Rajasthan.
